Apley's Scratch Test

| Method | While sitting or standing, the subject is instructed to take one hand and touch the opposite shoulder. The test is repeated with the other hand to the opposite side. The subject is then instructed to place the arm overhead and reach behind the neck as if scratching the upper back. To complete the test, the subject is instructed to place the hand in the small of the back and reach upward as far as possible. Asymmetrical results from side to side are positive for limitations in the joint capsule. |
