Are you using CMT codes (Chiropractic Manipulative Treatment) correctly?

CMT codes must properly report the correct number of areas adjusted and follow these guidelines:

98940 one-two areas or regions adjusted
98941 three-four areas or regions adjusted
98942 five areas or regions adjusted

There can be some confusion when a doctor reports the number of segments or vertebra adjusted versus the correct number of areas.

Example: The adjustment of C1, C3, C5 and T4 would properly be billed as a 98940 because the five spinal adjustments took place in two regions.

A very common coding mistake is reporting CMT code 98942. The CMT code 98942 requires one adjustment to take place in each of the five areas or regions of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum and pelvic regions.
